A Great Start For 2008

Indeed, Sonata Singers had a good start for January 2008 as we had gracefully served 10 lovely couples for that month alone as compared to last year where we only had 2 couples and one homecoming party.

It's also good to know that some of our clients dropped by a short message of thanks and appreciation at our friendster site, multiply site and in here, our main site. All we can say is that we are equally honored to be part of their wedding and are happy to know that we have become an integral part of the success of their big day.

We've been around for quite some time now and we're still going to be here for years to come. :-) You can check on that as our list of weddings we've serenaded will steadily grow in time.

Here's a good and thankful bye for the year 2007, and a big hello for 2008. :-)

Sonata Singers Goes To Boracay!!!

The last time I blogged, I remembered I was talking about an experience of being able to have a photo beside one of the Philippines’ most prominent persona (Former Chief Justice Davide). Now, after 7 months of preparations and making arrangements, a different experience for Sonata singers went by. This time we’re finally able to set our foot on the shores of Boracay. Yup, this is, by far, the best thing that ever happened to us as Sonata Singers! Thanks for the tremendous trust Rev Reyes (bride) gave to us. All arrangements and requests were done basically through email. Whew, how I love technology indeed! It’s the first time for all of us to go there and I just can’t tell you how excited all of us were. Although the trip was almost a 6 hour ride from Cebu to Iloilo to Kalibo to Caticlan then finally to Boracay, it was all worth it!

The wedding was held along the beach front of Waling-waling Beach resort, located at Station 1. And if you look at the photos I got, you can surmise that this is one unique wedding that’s worth remembering. For this wedding, we prepared love songs as requested by Vince (groom) and Rev, like Beautiful In My Eyes, Your Love (composed by Jim Brickman) and the rest of it were taken from our collection of love songs. One of the many unique setup of their wedding was the way they’d setup their tables for their guests… yup, no chairs for some tables which is, on my opinion, a very cool way to go. It was also the first time I saw a wedding with all their guests dressed in white! It felt like I’m in heaven surrounded by angels (or am I just being so imaginative here). There’s also this fire dance that totally blew me away. He or she (if you get my point here :-) ) was so graceful and the stunt was nerve cracking, breathtaking and simply stunning and flawless. Another first for me is the performance of the couple as they danced to the tune of “I’ve had the Time of My Life”. Never have I seen a couple go through such preparation such as this one (sorry guys, I’ve no photo of their dance). But I tell you this, it was worth seeing them express their love and desire for each other through that dance. And finally, to top it all, the wedding ended with a fearsome 15 to 20 minutes of fireworks display. Whew! I can’t describe how my neck felt like from watching it coz it’s almost a 75 degree angle from where I stand. And that was it, the culmination of their wedding but the start of friendship between the couple and the Sonata singers.

The next day, Sonata Singers went out early morning to face the sunrise of Boracay once more and have that soothing cold plunge on its coastline before going back to reality. I must say our stay was not enough but all in all, the experience was the best! And bringing my family there was twice as best! (Yup, I brought them with me too so that we can, at the same time, enjoy our first!) Thanks to Vince and Rev for believing and opening this door for us!

This one now goes to the list of weddings we serenaded and I'm pretty much having an idea now that this Boracay escapade won’t be the last for Sonata singers.

Sounds Like We're Many, the Power of Three

Yes, that's the usual comment we got from our future clients each time we advise them our schedule and tell them to witness and listen to our performance and songs during wedding ceremonies. And the basic reason for this is that each of us sing a different tune for most of the songs we do and it creates an effect as if we're like a whole choir compressed into three individuals. But if you're like St. Thomas, then don't believe anything I say here. Check us out! See and hear us sing and tell us what you think. :-)

If you'll have us for your reception then one of the advantages we have over a whole choir for the reception is our headcount. Yep, I'm sure most couples are looking for ways to fit in all their guests into their reception based on the no. of heads they can avail out of their wedding reception package. And we're glad to tell you that Sonata will only take three heads out from it if you'll have us perform during your reception. Our usual role in receptions is to sing for your guests while they're having their sumptuous dinner and to sing anywhere within your program as you deem necessary.

However, there are couples which have additional requirements than just having the three of us. Some may require a violinist, a guitarist and an additional vocalist. We're glad to tell you that we can provide that too. Just send in your inquiries through email and we'll be in contact with you the soonest time possible if not right away. :-)

Wedding of Allan and Denise Blanco

Who would ever thought being a wedding singer for Sonata would lead me standing beside former Chief Justice Secretary, Hon. Hilario Davide Jr. Our lives do have its twists. Our couple here (Allan and Denise Blanco) had made him one of their principal sponsors for their wedding. I guess that makes the long story short. :-)

For this wedding, Allan specifically chose the songs based on our repertoire and the ones he chose were standard but revised songs. The ones popularized now by Michael Buble and Martin Nievera and the like. Allan, like me, does not deny the fact that he do love these songs of the past. Allan and Denise is another lovely couple of ours where with just one look at them, you can see how much they love each other, their outgoing spirit, the sincerity and romance. Allan's choice of songs was not only loved by him and Denise but by all their guests as well. You may read Denise's testimonial here.

Their reception was held at Cafe Laguna near Ayala Center Cebu. And I must say that their sound system was superb, their sound engineer is well versed and is capable to achieving what I required for my voice to linger over and mix well with the background music.

A Back to Back Wedding to Remember

As the title implies, Sonata did two weddings in half a day last November 2006 and this was because the first couple (Jineil and Felisa Maranan) had us for the church ceremony while the second couple (Tristan and Giela Erojo) had us at their reception. Luckily that time, Giela Laput came in and requested for our services for that same day but the problem was that they had the same time slot as with Felisa's wedding. Giela would have wanted us to sing for her wedding ceremony but Felisa had us first. When told that we were available for her reception, she decided to have us for that part of her wedding as well. For us, it was worth the experience to try to make both ends meet, along with the initial fear that the planned ASEAN summit routing dry run will take place on that same day. That it may cause traffic. I think God heard our prayers since it was then announced that the planned dry run was moved to another day. Upon hearing that, out came the thorn and Sonata went all the way through both weddings with flying colors.

Wedding of Rick and Carissa Aznar

These days, it’s all normal for me to constantly get a text message from someone inquiring of our package. And meeting with clients is like a walk in the park now, but the day I met Carissa Garcia last November 2006 blew me away. There, in front of me, was this vigorous woman who’s made herself a mark not only here in Cebu but for the whole country as well (or perhaps more than that). And I am very honored and proud to be part of her wedding. Anyway, along with the first meeting was Jude Bacalso, a very known host of “Jud Morning” under ABS-CBN.

Carissa had a simple but elegant wedding which was held at ABACA, Mactan that same month. This is somewhere near Hillton Hotel. She had only one important request for us and that was to sing her favorite song “For Always” by Josh Groban/Lara Fabian and a revised version of the Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love” from the soundtrack album Love Actually.

In the end, like most of the weddings we attended, all went well and Sonata Singers had another graceful exit and another thank you note to cherish. :-)

Wedding of Elder & YoAnn Silva

I got a call from a friend in the U.S. a week or two before the wedding of her nephew, Elder Silva, to confirm that she’ll have Sonata Singers’ services for his nephew’s wedding. Luckily, we were still free that time and so we started off by communicating with the future couple through email. All agreements were based solely on trust as we were not able to personally meet the future couple who were in Manila that time. But still, everything went smoothly except for the couple’s first dance where Elder and YoAnn had a requested song for us to sing. There was a slight miscommunication between us and the host of their program since their host insisted that their recorded song be played during the dance which was a different song than what was expected by the couple. Overall, though, it was another job well done for Sonata Singers with the couple attesting to it. Thanks Elder and YoAnn for the thank you note you sent us.

Thanks to Mirasol for believing in us! I do hope to see you again someday my friend. :-)

Wedding of Renzo & Joy Belardo

The wedding of Renzo and Joy Belardo was quite a challenge for Sonata Singers since they required a lot of new versions of religious songs that they want to be sung in their wedding ceremony. Nevertheless, Sonata accepted it since there was ample time to rehearse the songs. All of their favorite religious songs were actually sung by a choir so our task was then to pick out the tunes coming from the melody, bass and tenor basing on the recorded songs they gave us. The songs are as follows: Panalangin sa Pagiging Bukas Palad, Kordero Ng Diyos, Take and Receive, Ama Namin, Sa Yo Lamang, Tanging Yaman and including the musical soundtrack Seasons of Love. It took a lot of rehearsals than usual for Sonata to finally get those notes flowing and when it came for us to finally sing it for them, it was good to know that it’s not just Renzo and Joy who loved it but the whole crowd as well. Joy even said and I quote: “Everyone loved your performance and I also didn’t expect the music to be as lovely as it was.”

Wedding of Lee & Jeanette Go

Let's hope it won't rain, but if you look at it (as he looked out to the sky), I don't think there's hope it won't... That's what emcee Ken told me as he was about to open up the wedding program of Lee and Jeanette Go in their reception at Chateau de Busay. The usual venue for a wedding reception in Chateau is located outside where the couple's guest are entertained by the beautiful scenery of the whole city of Cebu, the relaxing breeze and a spectacular view of nature at its best. The earlier parts of the program went along fine but halfway through the program, the inevitable happened... it rained.

Luckily though, minutes before it totally poured out to spoil the fun, Ken had already ordered for all to transfer inside Chateau and Chateau's personnel were so professional to respond to that demand that within minutes they were able to set it up inside and the program continued as if nothing happened. It's simply a walk in the park for Chateau's personnel and a smart move by Ken.

For this wedding, Sonata prepared a lot of new love songs and this includes new versions of When I Met You, The Way You Look Tonight (wherein the couple just can't help but dance to the tune), Just The Way You Are, You and lots more. It is good to see their guests baffle what song is currently playing, and it was even better to see their faces as they realize they're familiar to the songs we're rendering only that the accompaniment is somewhat new to them. :-)

After the program, the couple were so kind enough to request to have photos taken with us and the rest of the suppliers that were part of their wedding event. They mentioned they'll have their wedding event posted on their website. Hopefully, I'd be able to get the web address and post that link here. I'll update this post as soon as I'll have it.

Well, this just proves that wishes do get granted as I just received an email tonight from the bride's sister, Emily. And true enough, i now have their web address. Wedding of Christian & Melissa Vesina

Their wedding is yet another day in Sacread Heart Church for Sonata Singers as we belted out once again our songs and serenade the lovely couple. Reception this time is in Waterfront Lahug which is not also something new for Sonata. :-) Perhaps the most memorable part for me on this wedding was the last part of their wedding program. It was where they were told to kiss in front of their relatives and friends. I took a photo of that moment using my handy dandy cellular phone (lol). What I've captured though is the time after they have kissed wherein they hugged so tightly for a minute or two. I bet all the love was there for each other and that they're so much happy to have a successful wedding. For them, it's one memorable event that is carved in their hearts for the rest of their lives and Sonata is happy as well to be in the background and be part of it.

To the right is a photo of an ice sculpture which sits so tightly on one corner of their wedding reception to serve as an eye catcher for their guests.

Sonata at Michael and Cheryl Conner's Wedding

Sonata singer's month of September is not just another month. This one's special. Indeed it was special, as we witnessed, yet again, another unique wedding. I'm talking about the wedding of Michael and Cheryl Conner. Her wedding and reception was held at Montebello. I can't help myself to take photos of it. But I apologize for the small photo sizes as these are just taken by a cellular phone. If only I had a good camera to take pictures with. That's the sad part. :-(

What's so unique with this wedding is that the bride is a teacher of the deaf and I was so touched by the thought and the effort that she made to reach out and touch the heart of her students. By the look of it, on their happy faces, you can see that she was successful in doing it. So few individuals now have dedicated their life to make not just a difference to theirselves but to others as well.

I was kinda used to seeing gifts for the newlywed, but this time, it was a bit different from the usual. The couple, at the same time, also prepared gifts for their most treasured loved ones. I was so moved when the bride handed over a gift to her parents. And do you know what it is? It was a wedding ring for the both of them. A wedding ring which they haven't had but we're longing to have for a very long time. Guess that just proves the pureness of heart of Cheryl.

I got to meet the groom's sister too! Her name was Lori Conner Buffin. Guess what? She's a singer too! And she belted out some breathtaking songs especially dedicated to the couple. And like the bride, she too has the same passionate character within her which is truly visible even if it's the first time we got to know her. I'm hoping that as time goes by, more and more people will start to think and act like these two women had.

And lastly, kudos to the guys behind Montebello's sound system. We got the sound quality we wanted. :-)

Wedding Photos of Dexter and Annie Pajaren

I was browsing through my gmails this afternoon when a chat message from a friend popped out. It was Annie. She's one of those friends of ours who've entrusted us to render songs for their wedding. Without them, Sonata Singers won't be here. She got married with Dexter (whom we've also befriended and is likewise a good and trustworthy friend) last June 2004. And ever since that day, we made sure to drop by a few messages to each other from time to time. They now have a cutie daughter who looks just like her mom ( sorry dex... :-)) and I'm even one of the ninongs (godfather). Below are priceless images of their happiness during their big day, which was held at The Natl. Shrine of St. Joseph church (in Mandaue City, Cebu), as they became one in the eyes of God. And of course, a classic photo together with the old J3 now known as Sonata.

Sonata Singers: Singing is Our Passion

Just like the month of July, August will soon come to pass. Time do pass by so quickly isn't it? For Sonata Singers, July was again another month where we witness more couples binding themselves forever through the blessing of God and for us being there to serenade that moment. Nothing beats being wed in the church... i can tell you that. You feel more satisfaction and contentment out of it.

Afterwards, though, it's on with our daily lives with one of our familiar daily routines --- work, work, work...

Being at Sonata's forefront, I'm the one who usually meets the clients, talks with them and share some wedding ideas, and come up with a list of songs which they prefer (most of them, though, just leave it all to us). I really enjoy meeting them in person, seeing the glitter in the future couple's eyes and feeling the excitement they both share for their upcoming wedding. You'll really get, first hand, how they want their wedding to be... by all means perfect.

We, the Sonata Singers of Cebu, share the same level of perfection and that is why aside from our personal work, the group finds time to do rehearsals constantly in order to stay up to date with some of the latest love songs and or run through some old ones but most of the time, it's just for the mere fun and enjoyment of it. Our passion for music is what all of us share in the group and we intend to make it that way for years to come.

Sonata Singers at Archbishop's Palace

Singing without a microphone is a challenge the Sonata Singers always meet when we do weddings at the Archbishop's Palace, Cebu. Below right, you can see that we are belting our hearts out as we sing our wedding songs. Having a violinist comes in handy as it adds up more symphony to sonata. Simply put, there's just no microphone provision for wedding singers there. In Archbishop's palace, the choir is situated at the endmost part (near the entrance of the church). Not to worry though, since the church's area is unlike most churches here in Cebu. It only has a small area which is just enough for those who only have a few church attendees and just enough no. of persons for an entourage. If you belong to this category, you might want to consider The Archbishop's palace. Left photo shows Christopher and Teresa on their way to their bridal car after finally making and sealing their vows last May 2006.

Though the church’s area is small, the solemnity of the wedding ceremony is still there and it's even more solemn. Its ample space gives out a natural acoustic and sustain to our voices. So even without microphones around, we still feel the fullness of our voices. But, this is of course when everyone else is listening. :-) The hardest part, is when we try to project our voices during pictorial since almost everyone else is talking and busy, whether congratulating the newly wed, meeting an old friend or simply enjoying the moment...

Sonata at Work and More...

Due to persistent demand from our visitors, the Sonata Singers decided to post a link to a full version of the song "Promise of Love". We've also updated our list of weddings we've serenaded and we finally get to load up some photos of our collected missalettes and giveaways of the weddings we've attended here in Cebu.

We'd like to acknowledge Mrs. Nadette Rudinas for sharing to us some photos of her wedding celebration. You may take a peek of it here.

Also, we are proud to be able to perform at Parklane International Hotel last July 8. The hotel is not officially opened yet but it will soon have its soft opening within this month, July 12 to be exact. We're glad to have marked a spot there as early as that! Thanks to Danny for counting us in.

As Cebu's wedding singers, we are very particular to the quality of the sound system. In case we share the same need, you might want to check out The Sacred Heart Church who had nailed out what we needed. They're using Ramsa speakers and good quality microphones. We'll post additional photos soon so keep in touch.

First of all, we'd like to thank those who trusted and guided us during our first venture in this area. We can't thank you enough! You've sparked our enthusiasm, creativity and helped us build a strong love for music. It paved the way for the Sonata Singers to push through and finally deciding to make this a regular gig for us. We've been in many weddings now here in Cebu and we'll continue to do so as long as you want us to be around.

Who We Are...A Brief History

The Sonata singers are Cebu-based (Philippines) wedding singers. We started doing this gig since our college days and had been regularly doing it since 2001. We were formerly called J3 (Joemar, Julie, Jun – our initials) and had just decided lately to rename our group to Sonata since we’ve now grown as a group (with the inclusion of Gilbert and Mailyn). It would be awkward to name ourselves J3GM :-) and also, the name “Sonata” closely relates to what the members of this group really love…music!
